Preparation process
The production of tablets is a complex and sophisticated process that requires several steps and careful attention to ensure the final product is safe and effective.
- Preparation of Raw Materials: The first step is the selection and preparation of active ingredients and excipients. The active ingredient is the chemical compound that exerts the therapeutic effect, while excipients (such as binders, fillers, lubricants, and disintegrants) help with the tablet’s formulation, stability, and absorption in the body.
- Mixing: The raw materials must be thoroughly mixed to ensure even distribution of the active ingredient. This step is crucial for the quality and efficacy of the tablet.
- Wet or Dry Granulation (optional): Granulating the mixture creates uniformly sized particles that can be easily shaped into tablets. In wet granulation, liquid is added to the mixture, which is then dried, while dry granulation involves applying mechanical pressure.
- Tableting: The powder blend or granules prepared for tablets are compressed using tablet presses to achieve the final tablet form. This machine compresses the tablet ingredients under high pressure to create a stable and solid tablet.
- Coating (optional): Many tablets are coated with a thin film layer that protects the active ingredient from moisture, light, or stomach acid, and facilitates swallowing. These are known as film-coated tablets.
- Packaging and Storage: Finally, the finished tablets are appropriately packaged to preserve their quality until consumption.
